Tarrin was torn out of the vision like a fish hurled on the bank of the river, his mouth opening and closing, grabbing for air and finding none.
Donovan came into focus above him, his lips moving but no sound coming out.
A bucket appeared above his head.
The blood splashed against his face, a warm fragrant slap of nutritious goodness and Tarrin gulped greedily.
He sat up and shook his head to clear it. It was as if he had partaken in the greatest battle of his life and only now had woken by having his bell soundly rung.
Donovan smiled. “Did you see her?”
“Aye,” Tarrin said groggily.
“And, what say you, nephew?”
“I say that I did not do my job if her mother has been dead these long years.”
Donovan frowned. “It was not my purpose for you to harbor guilt about an incident you could do nothing about. It is the girl that I wished for you to acknowledge.”
Tarrin's eyebrows popped in an expression that was almost comical in its surprise.
“Acknowledge whom?”
“Your mate, Tarrin.”
Tarrin stood. He knew it! His dark face broke out into a grin so large it made a sound as his lips parted in happiness, his teeth a streak of bright white in the gloom.
Donovan's face did not hold a similar look. Tarrin's grin faded into a wan smile, then finally disappeared.
“What is it?”
“There is first a prophesy of critical importance that you must partake in. Your reward will be the binding of your perfect mate.”
“Soulmate?” Tarrin scoffed.
Donovan nodded, ignoring his sarcasm. “If you will.”
Tarrin did not know if that was possible. He thought back on the vision and reflected on his single teardrop manifesting itself in physical form... in the past; anything might be possible.
Then there were her words: My dark angel.
“The girl needs you,” Donovan said.
“Then why do I parlay here?” Tarrin said in a growl.
“Because it is fate's reward that you save your daughter, the queen, before she is killed in a traitor’s plan.”
“Siana!” Tarrin raged, throwing open the flap of the temple and the heat of the day pressed against him in a solid wall of oven-like warmth, stealing his breath.
“Do not!” Donovan implored. “You must have perfect timing. We will first execute a blood rite of protection before you travel to her.”
Tarrin's mind moved frenetically, touching on everything he knew, every piece of knowledge he possessed. Finally, he thought he understood what this was about.
“Samhain,” Tarrin said.
Donovan nodded.
“Damn,” Tarrin said in a quiet voice. Why didn't he see this as a possibility? His gaze narrowed on his uncle. “Why? We made a blood pact with the Druid's of that region....”
Donovan nodded, smiling. “Yes, you did.”
“That is why I must go,” Tarrin said, understanding laying claim inside his mind. If he were to stop this, only he could. It was he and the other Reaper... Baird, that had made the pact with the old Druid. He would release care of his only blooded daughter to that coven with the understanding she would rule as queen. Baird had made a vow to breed a Druid female to make their future stronger.
